The NY International Children’s Film Festival 2011 has begun. I will be attending the next few weekends and I’m pumped. In addition to a roster of great feature length films, the festival offers an array of selected shorts that are sometimes hard to find and view any other way.

The archetypes of youth vibrate though the screen: rites of passage and coming of age, belonging, playful wondering and wandering, family and friendship ties, hiding and running, fantasy worlds and inspiration, and dark themes dealing with death, bullying, rejection and pain (last year a short film dealt with the death of a twin which was hard for me to watch because I am a twin- “See You” by Jesper Waldvogel Rasmussen)
